The Castle of Mey is the most northerly castle on the British mainland. It stands in a magnificent setting on the Caithness coast, with views across the
Pentland Firth towards Orkney.
After her husband's death Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother acquired the castle,
restored it and created the beautiful walled garden. It is a working garden supplying fruit and vegetables, as well as beautiful flowers. The 15-foot high Great Wall of Mey protects the garden from gales and sea spray that blow from the Pentland Firth.
Longoe Farm, which adjoins the Castle, is renowned for the black Aberdeen Angus which has been bred in Scotland for centuries. The Queen Mother had her own
prize-winning pedigree herd. For almost half a century she returned to her holiday house every summer for the rest of her life. In 1996 she transferred ownership to the
castle to the Queen Elizabeth Castle of Mey Trust. After her death in 2002 Prince Charles as President of the trust takes a close interest in the castle and returns to stay there every year.
