Dornoch Highland Gathering

Dornoch Highland Gathering

Thanks for your patience! Video may take a few moments to finish loading.

The Gathering in Dornoch, in the County of Sutherland, began in 1887. It has been a focal point of the summer every year since. Sponsors and patrons support the Games. The Chieftain of the Dornoch Highland Gathering marches into the field behind the Dornoch Pipe Band that plays selections throughout the day. After his speech he declares the Games open. The competitions comprise piping, dancing, cycling, heavy events ( e.g. tossing the caber, throwing the heavy hammer, putting the heavy ball), and track and field events ( e.g. 100 yds, high jump, obstacle race, tilt the bucket).

Medals, cups and trophies, prize money and memorial shields are awarded to the winners. Thanks to the bar staff, stewards, catering ladies and many helpers the events run smoothly and always with a sense of humour.
