Coventry Cathedral
On the night of November 14 1940, the City of Coventry was devestated by heavy German bombing. The 14th
century Coventry Cathedral died in the flames. It was hit by several incendiary bombs dropped in the air-raids on Coventry. That night the City of Coventry suffered massive destruction and the loss of almost 600 lives. Her
Majesty The Queen Mother came to Coventry early in 1941, with her husband King
George VI, to view the devastation wrought on the City and to inspire the morale of the citizens.
The new Cathedral was consecrated in 1962, in the presence of HM The Queen. The ruins remained hallowed ground and together the two create
one living Cathedral. On November 14 1990, The Queen Mother returned to Coventry to attend the Service of Remembrance
and Reconciliation at the Cathedral. Whilst there she exchanged gifts with Richard von Weizsäcker, President of the
Federal Republic of Germany, and thus reinforced the Anglo-German bonds that are a feature of Coventry's commitment to the ideals of friendship and reconciliation.
