Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Palace

Hampton Court Palace (15 miles SW of central London) was built by Cardinal Wolsey in 1514-21. It was given by him to Henry VIII a few years later in an attempt to retain the royal favour.

The elegance of the Palace owes much to the Baroque buildings added by Christopher Wren. He was commissioned by William and Mary who wanted something more modern.

After the death of George II, in 1760, the palace was never used again as a royal residence. Queen Victoria opened it to the public in 1838. The Palace is set in 60 acres of gardens.
