Leeds Castle, 19 m W of Canterbury, is situated on two islands in a lake formed from the river Lem. A Norman fortress and a
royal palace to the medieval and Tudor Kings and Queens of England, Leeds Castle’s architecture has developed over nine centuries. Lady Baillie, an Anglo-American heiress, bought the
castle in 1926. She made it her family home. Since her death in 1974, the Castle has been owned by the Leeds Castle Foundation. This lovely historic property is surrounded by 500 acres of
attractive and historic gardens and parkland. In its long history, the castle and the surroundings have been changed repeatedly by a number of owners. It remained in royal hands until the
reign of Henry VIII. For him the royal palace was restored and enlarged. Today the castle has a collection of paintings, tapestries and antiques. It is also
home to a dog collar museum. This fine historic property is also called “the loveliest castle in the world”.
