The Suffolk Punch is one of the oldest breeds of heavy horse in Britain. It dates back to the beginning of the 16th century. The three largest breeds of horse on the island are the Clydesdale, a horse produced in Scotland for hauling coal, the Shires, the largest of the three, and the Suffolk, developed for dragging ploughs or heavy carts. The Suffolk Horse never moved out of its homeland East Anglia. It has a large powerful body and strong legs. Its colours range from bay to black, invariably with white markings. The Suffolk is 16 hands (5 1/4 feet ) in height.
